ANAT. Chacune des dents (au nombre de huit chez l'homme) situées à l'avant des arcades dentaires, caractérisées par une couronne aplatie à bord tranchant, et qui servent à couper les aliments. Incisives supérieures, inférieures; incisives centrales, internes, moyennes; incisives externes, latérales. Les mastodontes voient leurs incisives inférieures diminuer peu à peu, puis disparaître. En même temps leurs molaires se modifient de telles manières que certaines espèces de mastodontes se rapprochent tout à fait des éléphants (BOULE, Conf. géol., 1907, p. 160). Elle fait voir ses dents quand elle sourit; deux incisives du haut sont un peu irrégulières (ROMAINS, Hommes bonne vol., 1939, p. 42).
